On Wednesday, October 12 and Thursday, October 13, Fairview High School juniors and seniors participated in the League of Women Voters Forum and Mock Election.
As part of the election, student discussion and activities focused on the November 8, 2011 Ohio ballot Issue 2 Referendum on Amended Substitute Senate Bill No. 5. Issue 2 will either approve or reject a new Ohio law related to government union contracts and other government contracts and policies.
On Wednesday, students had the opportunity to participate in a Forum about Issue 2. League of Women Members Linda Lalley and Pam Smith took turns answering student questions about the different sides of Issue 2. Student questions included: If Senate Bill 5 passed, how would the money saved be used in Ohio?; Why are elected officials exempt from Senate Bill 5?; How will schools and students benefit from Senate Bill 5?; Is it legal for collective bargaining rights to be limited? and Why can we not tax the wealthy companies more?
On Thursday, students were able to participate in a mock election and vote on Issues 1, 2 and 3, which will all be on the November 8, 2011 ballot. Results were announced over the load speaker throughout the school day.
The purpose of the League of Women Voters Mock Election is to de-mystify the election process for the young, soon-to-be voters and to develop a lifelong commitment to citizen involvement.
